I first began making 'Bushblocks' in 2000 after building a home on acreage in a beautiful valley on the Sunshine Coast.
I had plenty of old timber stored from my previous work in home renovation and decided to build my wife a bench out of recycled timber. I put it on castors for easy removal as it was very heavy. She came home one day to find the ‘bench’ sitting at the end of the l-shaped cupboards and was thrilled to have a new preparation surface.
Neighbours and friends visited and commented favourably about the new ‘bench on castors’ and ordered one for their own homes. An idea was born. My wife said they reminded her of the old butcher’s blocks of yesteryear and seeing as we had moved to a ‘block in the bush’… why didn’t we call them ‘Bushblocks’? |
